Members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) have expressed frustration over the Federal Government’s failure to implement the long-promised N77,000 monthly allowance.
The government had approved the allowance increase from N33,000 to N77,000, with implementation expected to start in July 2024. However, delays due to funding issues led to a revised commencement date of February 2025, as announced by NYSC Director-General Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed.
According to a report in The Punch, corps members confirmed they received only N33,000 for February, sparking widespread disappointment.
A corps member serving in Abia State criticized the delay, calling it “insincere.” She highlighted the financial struggles faced by corps members, including high transportation, feeding, and accommodation costs.
Another serving in Osun State lamented, “The Federal Government should act fast. This N33,000 is not enough to cover basic expenses, and we are struggling to survive.”
In Lagos, another corps member echoed similar sentiments, adding, “We keep hearing promises of N77,000, yet nothing has changed. It’s frustrating.”
Attempts to get an official response from NYSC spokesperson Carol Embu were unsuccessful. However, a senior NYSC official anonymously confirmed that the new allowance payment had yet to begin.
With inflation and economic hardship mounting, corps members continue to demand swift action from the government.
