At least 34 embassies in Abuja risk being shut down by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) over failure to pay ground rents dating back to 2014, The PUNCH reports.

The FCTA disclosed that the affected diplomatic missions collectively owe N3.66 billion in unpaid rents, despite several notices.

The publication did not name all the embassies, but confirmed that other previously listed defaulters—including the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP)—have since settled their debts.

This crackdown follows a directive issued on May 26 by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who ordered the enforcement and revocation of 4,794 property titles over unpaid ground rents spanning 10 to 43 years.

However, President Bola Tinubu stepped in shortly afterward, granting a 14-day grace period for affected individuals and institutions to clear their arrears. That window closes Monday, June 9.
