Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has dismissed viral social media rumors linking him to the pregnancy of reality TV star Nengi Hampson. The speculation, which spread widely online, alleged that the governor fathered Nengi’s child and further claimed he had multiple wives.
Reacting to the claims on Tuesday, Diri’s Chief Press Secretary, Samuel Oredipe, described the allegations as “fake news” orchestrated by political opponents to tarnish the governor’s reputation. He emphasized that Nengi, a former Big Brother Naija star who was appointed Senior Special Assistant on Girl Child Development in 2020, has no personal relationship with the governor beyond her official duties.
Oredipe condemned the rumors, noting that they surfaced on the same day the governor’s administration began activities marking its fifth anniversary. He accused political detractors of attempting to distract from the government’s achievements, including the inauguration of a new road in Yenagoa. “Governor Diri is a man of honor and dignity,” he asserted, adding that such falsehoods justify calls for stricter social media regulation.
Nengi also took to her X (formerly Twitter) account to debunk the claims. While confirming that she is indeed pregnant, she clarified that no governor is responsible. “I’ve chosen to speak because this isn’t just an attack on me, it involves people I hold in the highest regard. I won’t allow a beautiful, personal part of my life be turned into something ugly,” she wrote.
