The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has cautioned the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) against its planned shutdown of telecommunications services on March 1 in protest against the recent 50% tariff hike.
In a statement on Sunday, NSCDC spokesperson Babawale Afolabi confirmed that operatives had been deployed to protect telecom infrastructure from any disruptions by protesters.
He maintained that telecom facilities are classified as critical national assets, and any interference could pose serious security and economic risks.
Meanwhile, industry groups such as the Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria and the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria have also condemned the proposed shutdown. They warned that such actions could harm the sector and disrupt essential services.
The NLC, however, insists that the tariff hike is unjust and places an additional financial burden on Nigerians.
