The protracted leadership crisis at the Lagos State House of Assembly may soon be resolved following the intervention of key figures in the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to media report, the party’s heavyweight politicians are working towards a compromise that could see both the impeached Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, and the current Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, step aside for a new lawmaker to take over the leadership.
The resolution efforts are being spearheaded by a high-powered APC delegation that includes former governors Chief Bisi Akande (Osun), Segun Osoba (Ogun), and Akinwunmi Ambode (Lagos), among others. Their mediation was reportedly initiated at the directive of President Bola Tinubu, following the failure of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) to resolve the crisis.
Recall that the crisis erupted on January 13, 2025, when 36 out of 40 lawmakers voted to remove Obasa as Speaker, citing a range of allegations, including poor leadership, habitual lateness to legislative sessions, high-handedness, and a disregard for colleagues and the executive, particularly Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. He was also accused of abuse of office, intimidation, misappropriation of funds, and oppression of fellow lawmakers.
Obasa was immediately replaced by Meranda, his former deputy. However, the power struggle has since divided the Assembly, with some lawmakers supporting Obasa’s return, while others insist on new leadership.
