The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it an unconstitutional attempt to undermine democracy. The party rejected the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, insisting that the President lacks the authority to remove an elected leader.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba described the move as a violation of the 1999 Constitution. He accused Tinubu of attempting to impose an unelected administrator on the state, a decision he said disregards the will of Rivers residents who voted for Fubara.

“The PDP outrightly rejects this attempt by the President to override the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and undermine the votes and will of the people of Rivers State by seeking to depose a democratic government and foist an undemocratic rule in the State,” Ologunagba stated.

The opposition party also warned that the appointment of an administrator to replace Fubara is a “clear attack on our nation’s democracy” and a dangerous precedent that threatens the country’s democratic system.

They therefore urged Nigerians and the international community to resist what they called an abuse of executive power.
