Myanmar has begun a national week of mourning after a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake claimed over 2,000 lives, with tremors felt as far as Thailand and China.

The military government has declared a week of national mourning, with a nationwide moment of silence set for 12:51 local time on Tuesday—the exact time the quake struck last Friday.

The disaster has also impacted neighboring Thailand, where 20 people have died and thousands have been forced to evacuate damaged buildings in Bangkok. Despite rescue efforts continuing in both countries, hope is dwindling as the critical 72-hour survival window has passed.

The United Nations has warned that the earthquake has worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, which has been embroiled in a four-year civil war.

Despite the destruction, reports suggest the military government continues to carry out airstrikes against pro-democracy rebel groups, adding to the suffering of an already devastated nation.
