U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a 14 percent tariff on Nigerian exports to the United States, a move aimed at rebalancing trade relations. Speaking at a Make America Wealthy Again event in the White House Rose Garden on Wednesday, Trump justified the decision as necessary to counter what he called “unfair trade practices.”
The U.S. government argues that Nigeria’s 27% tariff on American exports has long disadvantaged American businesses and consumers.
In addition to the 14 per cent tariff on Nigerian exports, President Trump also unveiled a broader trade policy that includes a baseline 10 per cent tariff on all U.S. imports.
By imposing this tariff, the administration hopes to level the playing field and encourage more balanced trade between the two nations.
The new tariffs, which take immediate effect, apply to more than 50 countries.
