The newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has revealed plans to undertake a long-overdue renovation of the historic Alaafin’s palace in Oyo town, promising to preserve its rich cultural and traditional esessence.I

In an interview published by the Nigerian Tribune, Oba Owoade expressed the need for structural upgrades, noting that the ancient palace, originally constructed nearly two centuries ago by Atiba ‘Latunbosun—the first Alaafin in present-day Oyo—has never undergone significant reconstruction.

“If you have been to the Aafin, you will agree with me that it needs some repairs,” the monarch said. “Some new buildings need to be constructed, and some need to be renovated.”

He assured the public that while modernization efforts are necessary, they will be carefully executed to maintain the architectural and cultural integrity of the palace.

“We are looking at reconstructing the palace without compromising the standard, culture, and tradition,” Oba Owoade stated.

The announcement marks the monarch’s first major public commitment since ascending the throne as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo over the weekend.
