Seventeen-year-old Quadri Alabi, who gained national attention during the 2023 presidential elections for bravely standing in front of Labour Party candidate Peter Obi’s convoy, has finally regained his freedom after nearly three months in detention.
Alabi was discharged on Thursday by a Magistrate Court in Apapa, Lagos, following legal advice from the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, which confirmed that there was no evidence to sustain the armed robbery charge filed against him.
“We are excited to announce that Quadri Yusuf Alabi… has been freed by the court today, 17th April, 2025,” his lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, said in a statement posted on X.
Effiong described Alabi’s ordeal as a “diabolical frame-up,” alleging that known local thugs in the Amukoko area, identified as Lege and Baba Waris, orchestrated his arrest and detention.
The teenager had been held at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre since his arrest.
