The Federal Government has secured the release of six Nigerian women who were wrongly detained in Cape Verde on unfounded human trafficking charges.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the women, who had travelled to the island nation for a holiday, were freed after diplomatic intervention proved the allegations baseless.

Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa confirmed that the Nigerian Mission in Guinea Bissau played a key role by engaging with Cape Verdean authorities to secure the women’s release.

The women have since departed Cape Verde and are expected to reunite with their families in Nigeria.
