As workers across Nigeria marked the 2025 May Day celebration, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has renewed calls for the upward review of the retirement age for all categories of civil servants.

Speaking at the celebration held at Eagle Square in Abuja, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, demanded that the retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently exclusive to teachers, health professionals, and judges—be extended to all public sector workers.

Ajaero, while presenting the union’s demands, said, “It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges to all public servants.”

According to the NLC boss, uniformity in retirement policy would ensure fairness and retain experienced hands within the public service for longer, thereby enhancing efficiency and continuity in governance.
