The Federal Government has begun revalidating the National Social Register to enhance the credibility of its conditional cash transfer programme, designed to ease the hardship caused by ongoing economic reforms.
Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, revealed during a press briefing in Abuja that 2.3 million households have so far been verified and approved for payments under the renewed initiative.
The revalidation follows concerns from the World Bank about the slow pace of the cash transfer rollout, which was introduced in 2023 after the removal of fuel subsidies and the unification of Nigeria’s exchange rate.
Coker-Odusote assured that the ongoing verification would strengthen transparency, ensure accurate targeting of beneficiaries, and restore public trust in the government’s social protection efforts.
