U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guardsmen to Los Angeles following escalating unrest over federal immigration raids targeting undocumented migrants.
Tensions flared for a second consecutive day in the city’s Paramount district, a predominantly Latino neighborhood, where clashes broke out between protesters and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. Law enforcement responded with tear gas and batons in efforts to disperse the crowds.
The unrest comes after a series of controversial ICE operations across Los Angeles this week that have led to 118 arrests — including 44 on Friday alone.
Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, defended the administration’s actions, telling Fox News: “We are making Los Angeles safer.”
However, California Governor Gavin Newsom has sharply criticized the raids, labeling them “cruel” and warning that they could deepen fear in immigrant communities.
