Portugal have etched their name in UEFA Nations League history once again, defeating fierce rivals Spain in a 5-3 penalty shootout to claim their second title in Munich on Sunday night.
The match ended 2-2 in regular time after a fiercely contested final, with Cristiano Ronaldo delivering yet another iconic moment in his illustrious career, equalising in the 61st minute and later breaking down in emotional celebration after Portugal triumphed on penalties.
However, Spain took the lead in the 21st minute through Martin Zubimendi after Portugal failed to clear their lines, but their advantage was short-lived as Nuno Mendes smashed in an angled finish just five minutes later. Mikel Oyarzabal restored La Roja’s lead before half-time, only for Ronaldo to respond with a poacher’s finish, hooking in a deflected cross from Mendes.
With no goals in extra time and Ronaldo substituted before the additional 30 minutes, the game went to penalties. Goncalo Ramos, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, and Mendes all held their nerve, while Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa saved Álvaro Morata’s tame attempt.
Rúben Neves sealed the victory, coolly dispatching the final spot-kick to spark wild celebrations. The win means Portugal become the first nation to win two UEFA Nations League titles, narrowly denying Spain the chance to do the same after their 2023 triumph.
