President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law three landmark education bills establishing new federal institutions in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

The bills, all sponsored by Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, pave the way for the creation of the Federal College of Education, Bende; the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Bende; and the Federal University of Okigwe, Imo State.

A statement issued on Monday by Kalu’s Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, confirmed the presidential assent and outlined the objectives of the new institutions.

According to the statement, the Federal College of Education, Bende will offer full-time courses and training in fields including technology, applied sciences, commerce, arts, social sciences, humanities, and management. The college will also engage in research aimed at adapting new techniques and innovations to Nigeria’s unique development needs.

On the other hand, the Federal University of Medical and Health Sciences, Item, in Bende, Abia State, is expected to deliver high-quality medical and health education through a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The university will also prioritize cutting-edge research in medical sciences, public health, and healthcare delivery.

Similarly, the Federal University of Okigwe, Imo State, will cater to the broader educational needs of the region and contribute to academic advancement and national development.

Nwabughiogu noted that the institutions would be equipped with administrative structures including a provost and other key officials to oversee academic operations, student affairs, and institutional discipline.
