At least eight people have died following a hot air balloon crash in southern Brazil, authorities confirmed on Saturday.

The accident occurred in the city of Praia Grande, Santa Catarina State, during a morning flight carrying 21 passengers. Governor Jorginho Mello confirmed the incident in a post on X expressing condolences to the victims’ families.

According to a statement from the state government press office, 13 people, including the pilot, survived the crash and no one remains unaccounted for.

Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) has launched an investigation into the cause of the crash, stating that it is taking “all necessary steps to investigate the condition of the aircraft and the crew” involved.
