President of Nigeria’s Senate Chambers, Godswill Akpabio has hinted at an impending political shake-up in Nigeria’s South-South region, suggesting that Governors Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and Douye Diri of Bayelsa may soon join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Akpabio made the revelation during a high-profile reception at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, held to welcome Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, into the APC following his recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The event was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, as well as a host of APC governors and federal lawmakers.
Speaking to the crowd, Akpabio described Governor Eno’s crossover as a sign of a wider political realignment in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections. “Don’t be surprised when you hear that Bayelsa and Rivers governors are also on their way to the APC,” he said, sparking speculation about the future of the South-South’s long-standing loyalty to the PDP.
As of Sunday morning, there has been no official response from Governors Fubara or Diri regarding Akpabio’s remarks.
