Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, Mr. Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to shift focus from infrastructure projects to the protection of lives, describing the current security crisis in Nigeria as a state of war.
Obi made the appeal in a statement shared via his official X handle on Wednesday, in reaction to the recent killing of over 100 people—including military personnel—by suspected terrorists in Zamfara State.
“This is beyond politics,” Obi wrote. “The soul of our nation is bleeding.”
He stressed the urgency of the moment, calling for decisive action to halt the growing tide of violence and insecurity sweeping across the country. “With the brutal killings of over 100 people in Zamfara, including our revered military men, Mr. President, it is time to accept the inevitable truth and act decisively. Nigeria is at war. We can no longer afford the dangerous denial.”
The former Anambra State governor lamented the frequency of violent deaths across Nigeria, insisting that the protection of human lives must now take precedence over physical infrastructure projects.
