Fresh details have emerged surrounding the sudden resignation of Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), revealing deep political undercurrents linked to the return of his long-time rival, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
According to insiders at the APC national secretariat, Ganduje stepped down on Friday following reports of an advanced political agreement between President Bola Tinubu and Kwankwaso for the former Kano governor and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to defect to the APC.
The development reportedly threw the party’s top hierarchy into a frantic attempt to dissuade Ganduje from quitting. Party officials, including National Secretary Ajibola Basiru, made repeated efforts to pacify the former Kano State governor.
A party source disclosed that: “We are currently pleading with him (Ganduje) not to resign. He is upset that Kwankwaso is coming to the APC. I think the two of them are sworn enemies. All the stakeholders are begging him to stay.”
Despite the efforts, Ganduje reportedly tendered his resignation around 4:15 pm on Friday, signaling a bitter protest against the potential reintegration of Kwankwaso into the APC fold.
“There’s clearly something personal between Ganduje and Kwankwaso,” the source added, hinting at a long-standing rivalry that dates back to their successive leaderships in Kano State.
