Fresh political tension has gripped Ondo State following mounting pressure on Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
The late governor, who passed away in Germany on December 27, 2023, after a prolonged illness, is now at the center of a brewing controversy as multiple petitions demand a coroner’s inquest into his demise.
State Attorney General Kayode Ajulo confirmed on Monday that his office had received “numerous petitions” from professional groups and concerned citizens, particularly from Akeredolu’s hometown of Owo, seeking clarity on the former governor’s death.
“The Coroners Law empowers citizens to demand investigations when legitimate concerns exist,” Ajulo stated. “We are duty-bound to follow due process without bias.”
The justice commissioner informed that the government would allow the law to take its course, though he declined to specify the nature of the suspicions raised in the petitions.
The development has drawn sharp reactions from prominent Ondo indigenes, including former Transport Minister Ademola Adegoroye, an APC chieftain.
