Tributes continue to pour in for Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his younger brother, Andre Silva, following their tragic death in a car crash on Thursday in Zamora, Spain.
The 28-year-old football star and his 26-year-old brother, also a footballer, were travelling in a Lamborghini when the vehicle crashed and caught fire. The devastating incident occurred as Jota was returning to Liverpool for pre-season training. Due to a recent minor surgery, he opted to travel by road and ferry rather than fly—on medical advice.
Just eleven days before the crash, Jota had married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso. The couple shared three children.
A wake for the brothers is scheduled for Friday afternoon in Porto, Portugal, with their funeral to follow on Saturday.
Liverpool FC, in a statement, described Jota’s passing as “a tragedy that transcends football.” Supporters have begun gathering outside Anfield, laying flowers, scarves, and heartfelt notes in tribute to the much-loved forward.
