A new chapter in Yoruba history unfolded on Saturday as Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I was officially crowned the 46th Alaafin of Oyo, succeeding the revered Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, who reigned for over five decades until his passing on April 22, 2022.
The colorful coronation ceremony was held at Oliveth Baptist High School, Oyo, drawing traditional rulers, government officials, dignitaries, and well-wishers from across Nigeria. It marked the culmination of a rigorous selection process, steeped in tradition and not without controversy, including the mandatory 21-day rite that precedes the assumption of the throne.
Oba Owoade, now addressed as His Imperial Majesty, Iku Baba Yeye, was formally handed the Staff of Office by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in January 2025. This presentation ended years of suspense and debate surrounding the choice of a new Alaafin.
The coronation, rich in cultural displays and Yoruba heritage, was attended by high-profile figures such as:
– President Bola Tinubu, represented by Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu
– Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State
– Former Deputy Governor, Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja
– Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Debo Ogundoyin
– Senator Yunus Akintunde (Oyo South)
– Royal dignitaries including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Olaoye, and the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Akanbi
Governor Makinde, in his address, affirmed that the process leading to the emergence of the new king had followed due diligence. He urged citizens to rally behind the new monarch and support his vision for the town’s development.
Clad in regal white and gold agbada, the new Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from the people of Oyo. He spoke about unity, peace, and development, pledging to serve with wisdom, humility, and dedication.
The ceremony featured goodwill messages from prominent Nigerians, cultural performances, and an outpouring of joy from the Oyo community, both at home and in the diaspora.
Born 47 years ago into the royal Owoade-Agunloye family of Oyo, the new monarch hails from the Agure Compound and is the son of Aremo Aderounmu Iyanda Owoade. His ascension represents continuity in leadership and tradition, as he takes on the mantle to build upon the legacy of his predecessor.
As the ancient town of Oyo begins a new era under Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, all eyes are on the young monarch to uphold tradition while ushering in progress.
Long may you reign, Iku Baba Yeye!
