A former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi has strongly opposed President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state, describing it as a “brazen attempt at power grab.”
In a statement on Wednesday, Amaechi, a former presidential aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), rejected the suspension of elected officials, warning that the move threatens Nigeria’s democracy.
He alleged that the crisis in Rivers was being “orchestrated” to serve the interests of certain individuals seeking to impose their authority on the state.
Amaechi therefore urged politicians and lawmakers to resist the suspension, calling on the National Assembly to intervene.
He maintained that removing a governor must follow constitutional procedures, warning that allowing Tinubu’s decision to stand could set a dangerous precedent for democratic governance in Nigeria.
