Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr has etched her name in history as the first woman in 16 years to win Best African Music Act at the prestigious MOBO Awards. The 2025 ceremony, held in Newcastle, saw the rising star dominate the night with not just one but two major victories.

Ayra Starr also claimed the Best International Music Act award, outshining global heavyweights like Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, GloRilla, and Latto.

The Nigerian singer faced stiff competition from fellow Afrobeats stars Asake and Tems, as well as South Africa’s Tyla, but emerged victorious, further solidifying her influence in the African music scene.

Ayra Starr now joins an elite league of Nigerian artists who have won Best International Music Act at the MOBO Awards, a title previously held only by Wizkid (2017, 2021) and Burna Boy (2020, 2022).

The 21-year-old’s rapid ascent in the industry, marked by chart-topping hits and international recognition, signals an exciting new era for African music.
