Elder statesman and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has called on President Bola Tinubu to reinstate suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as a gesture of reconciliation and democratic healing ahead of June 12 Democracy Day.
In an open letter to the president, George, a former PDP deputy national chairman (South-West), appealed for forgiveness and political magnanimity, urging Tinubu to emulate the spirit of the June 12 democratic struggle, which symbolises the will of the people.
“Since Tinubu has forgiven Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos, then it makes a lot of sense, spiritually, to also forgive Fubara and let him return to office. I am talking as an elder,” George said, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
He stressed that reinstating Fubara would send a powerful message of unity, maturity, and democratic tolerance. “June 12 is a reminder of the sacrifices made to enthrone democracy in Nigeria. True democracy thrives on justice, forgiveness, and inclusiveness,” George noted.
While Tinubu recently pardoned Sanwo-Olu in an undisclosed matter, political tension continues in Rivers State, where Fubara faces a turbulent standoff with lawmakers and political stakeholders. George believes that presidential intervention could restore calm.
