A Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday granted former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, bail in the sum of N2 billion over fresh corruption allegations.
Emefiele is facing an eight-count charge bordering on alleged criminal breach of trust, conspiracy, and theft. The charges include claims that he diverted billions of naira through proxy accounts and fraudulently acquired a 753-unit housing estate.
Presiding over the case, Justice Halilu Yusuf ruled that the prosecution failed to present evidence that Emefiele had ever jumped bail in his previous legal battles.
The former CBN boss is currently facing three other ongoing criminal trials, in which he was also previously granted bail.
The judge, therefore, granted Emefiele bail on the condition that he provides two sureties who must own properties valued at no less than N2 billion within Abuja’s highbrow districts—Asokoro, Maitama, or Wuse 2—and within the court’s jurisdiction.
