At least 22 people, including children and the elderly, have been confirmed dead following a series of devastating flash floods and tornadoes that tore through several states in the Midwestern and southern United States over the weekend.
Officials reported that Tennessee bore the brunt of the tragedy, accounting for nearly half of the fatalities. Missouri and Kentucky each recorded three deaths, while additional casualties were reported in Indiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and Arkansas.
The powerful storms, which unleashed torrential rains and violent winds, have caused rivers to overflow their banks, prompting the National Weather Service to warn that dozens of locations are expected to hit “major flood stage” despite the rain beginning to subside.
As of Monday, nearly nine million Americans remained under flood watch, according to US media reports.
