Violent windstorms has torn through parts of Gombe and Sokoto states, claiming at least five lives, injuring dozens, and rendering thousands homeless over the weekend.
In Gombe State, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Amada, Akko Local Government Area, bore the brunt of the storm. The ferocious winds ripped through the camp on Sunday, destroying roofs of hostels and damaging the main pavilion. The chaos left many corps members shaken, though no fatalities were reported at the facility.
Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Adamu Ibrahim, visited the site shortly after the incident. He assured the corps members of the government’s immediate intervention to ensure their safety and restore normalcy at the camp. “We are committed to fixing this urgently. Your welfare remains a top priority,” Ibrahim said during his inspection.
However, the situation was more dire in Sokoto State, where the storm left a deadly trail. Authorities confirmed five deaths in various communities, with local health centres overwhelmed by the number of injured residents seeking treatment.
