The death toll from the devastating Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad has risen to 279, making it one of the deadliest aviation disasters of the 21st century.
A senior police official in the city, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the updated figure on Saturday. The latest toll surpasses the earlier estimate of 265 as more bodies continue to be recovered from the wreckage.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, crashed into a densely populated residential area shortly after take-off on Thursday. The aircraft was carrying 242 people, including passengers and crew, with only one person, a British national seated in 11A—miraculously surviving.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier described the crash as “heartbreaking beyond words” and has promised a full investigation into what led to the tragedy.
