A celebratory evening in Liverpool turned tragic on Monday when a car drove into a crowd during Liverpool FC’s Premier League victory parade, injuring nearly 50 people, including four children.

According to Merseyside Police, 27 individuals were taken to hospital, with two, one of them a child suffering serious injuries. The driver, a 53-year-old white British man, has been arrested. Authorities say they are not treating the incident as terrorism-related.

Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram described the incident as a dark cloud over an otherwise joyous day. “The euphoria of the occasion was completely overshadowed,” he told the BBC, urging the public to allow police to carry out their investigation.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the chaotic scene as the parade came to a halt. Police are continuing their inquiries into the motive and circumstances surrounding the crash.
