Health experts are raising fresh awareness on the critical role fruits and vegetables play in boosting well-being and preventing life-threatening diseases.

According to global health data, increasing daily intake of these plant-based foods could save as many as 2.7 million lives annually.

The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that low fruit and vegetable consumption contributes to roughly 31 percent of ischaemic heart disease cases and 11 percent of strokes worldwide. The organisation warns that neglecting fruits and vegetables in one’s diet could have fatal consequences.

Dietitian Okikiade Taiwo explains that beyond their colourful appeal, fruits are essential to the body’s detoxification processes. “They help flush out acidic substances from the body, support digestion, and nourish key organs,” she said.

Taiwo added that fruits are rich in dietary fibre, antioxidants, and phytoestrogens compounds known to combat inflammation and hormonal imbalances.

Historically, plant-based foods were used as natural remedies to treat ailments ranging from headaches to heart disease. This long-standing wisdom is now backed by science, which confirms that fruits and vegetables provide a wealth of health benefits.

Research also shows that fruit can be consumed at any time before or after meals since they contain enzymes that aid digestion and provide the body with what it needs to break down complex foods.

Experts agree that integrating a variety of fruits and vegetables into meals not only enhances flavour but also delivers essential vitamins, minerals, and protective nutrients that guard against chronic illnesses.

“Your health is truly your wealth,” Taiwo said, urging Nigerians to adopt a diet rich in fruits and vegetables as a simple, cost-effective path to long-term wellness.
