The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has named former Mali international Eric Chelle as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. The decision was approved by the NFF Executive Committee following a recommendation from its Technical and Development Sub-Committee.

Chelle, born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, brings a wealth of experience to the role. The French-Malian former defender had an impressive playing career, featuring for clubs such as Valenciennes, Lens, and Istres in France. He also earned five caps for the Malian national team between 2004 and 2006.

The 45-year-old transitioned into coaching in 2017, managing clubs across France and Algeria before taking charge of the Mali national team in 2022.

He guided Mali to the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, a tournament where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up. His tenure with Mali ended in June 2024 after two years of service.

Chelle’s coaching style speaks to aerial dominance and defensive organization, reflecting his background as a central defender. With a managerial record of 67 wins, 40 draws, and 41 losses, his win rate of 45.27% highlights his tactical acumen. Nigerians will hope he can deliver success and lead the Super Eagles to trophy-laden campaigns.

Fluent in French, English, and several African languages, Chelle’s ability to communicate effectively with his squad will be key as he takes on this new challenge.

Fans eagerly await his impact on the team as preparations for upcoming competitions begin.
