The European Union (EU) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) have reaffirmed their commitment to support the safe return of displaced residents from Yelwata and neighbouring communities affected by recent armed herders’ attacks.

This assurance came during a meeting held at the emergency camp situated at the International Market in Makurdi, where representatives of the two organisations engaged with leaders from the affected communities to assess the situation and chart a path toward resettlement.

EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Gautier Mignot, who spoke with journalists on Tuesday evening, said the EU was in Benue State to express solidarity and extend support to both the state government and victims of the violent attacks.

He noted that beyond humanitarian aid, sustainable peace must be rooted in dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation among communities. “We believe that lasting peace can only come through dialogue and reconciliation,” Mignot stated.

UNICEF also promised to provide critical support, particularly for children and families, as efforts continue to rebuild lives and restore stability in the conflict-affected areas.
