The federal government has dismissed claims that it has scrapped the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) education system, clarifying that discussions on potential reforms are still ongoing.

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, debunked the reports in an interview with THISDAY, emphasizing that while a transition to a 12-year uninterrupted basic education model is being considered, no final decision has been reached.

The clarification follows media speculation that the federal government had abolished the 6-3-3-4 education structure and replaced it with a 12-4 model. Some reports suggested that Alausa made the announcement during the 2025 extraordinary National Council on Education (NCE) meeting in Abuja.

Alausa acknowledged that some developed countries have implemented similar models but insisted that Nigeria remains in the deliberation phase. He stressed that no changes would take effect without proper evaluation and approval.

“We haven’t even got to the implementation phase. The National Council of Education, the highest decision-making body on education policies, must first approve any change,” he stated, urging the public to disregard unfounded reports.
