The Federal Government has inaugurated a committee to overhaul the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), with plans to make the scheme more impactful, safer for corps members, and aligned with Nigeria’s current developmental needs.

This is in response to growing concerns about the safety of corps members, inadequate infrastructure at orientation camps, and debates over the relevance of the programme in today’s economic and social realities.

The committee, unveiled on Tuesday in Abuja, includes representatives from government agencies, civil society organisations, and the private sector.

According to officials, its mandate is to propose strategic reforms that will strengthen the NYSC’s role in nation-building while addressing the needs and aspirations of Nigerian youth.

Stakeholders at the inauguration expressed optimism that the proposed changes could modernise the scheme, enhance youth engagement, and ensure better protection for participants.
