A tragic stampede at the Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious festivals in northern India, has left at least a dozen people dead, according to eyewitnesses and hospital sources.

The incident occurred as massive crowds gathered for the sacred bathing ritual in the Ganges River, though official casualty figures are yet to be confirmed.

According to media reports, there were scenes of “absolute chaos” at the riverbank, with personal belongings like shoes, clothes, and backpacks scattered everywhere as terrified devotees tried to escape the crush. Despite organisers suspending the ritual due to safety concerns, tens of thousands of pilgrims reportedly still attempted to take the holy dip, overwhelming authorities.

The Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, attracts millions of Hindus seeking spiritual cleansing. This year, officials anticipated up to 100 million attendees, highlighting the immense challenge of managing such a colossal event.
