Local flight operations are expected to resume at the Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan, Oyo State, before the end of 2025, the state government has announced.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, revealed that the airport is undergoing significant upgrades aimed at transforming it into a modern international aviation hub.

According to Oyelade, work is already 55% complete on key infrastructure such as the runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads. “Local flights should resume thereafter, subject to the approval of relevant regulatory authorities,” he said.

The upgrades include extending the runway from 2,400 to 3,000 meters and widening it from 45 to 60 meters to accommodate wide-body aircraft for international flights. Additionally, the airport’s lighting has been upgraded to CAT C standards, and firefighting and safety facilities have been enhanced.

Customs, Immigration, and other critical agencies are also being integrated into the airport’s operations as part of its move toward international standards.

Oyelade noted that the construction of an international terminal is already underway and currently stands at 15% completion, with full delivery expected by June 2026.

“These upgrades reflect the government’s vision of transforming the Ibadan Airport into a modern and internationally competitive facility,” he said.
