Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, was thrown into mourning on Monday following the death of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, at the age of 90.

The monarch, who ascended the throne on July 12, 2024, died in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday. His demise comes barely a year after he was installed as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland by Governor Seyi Makinde, following the death of his predecessor, Oba Moshood Lekan Balogun.

Oba Olakulehin’s passing was confirmed through traditional rites, and the city has been steeped in grief ever since. Known for his humility and calm disposition, the monarch was described by family members and associates as a down-to-earth leader who carried the weight of tradition with quiet dignity.

Adamimogo FM Nigeria correspondent, Dayo Olujobi observed tributes as they poured in from political figures, traditional chiefs, and market leaders across Oyo State. Among those who paid glowing tributes were Aderemi Adedibu, the son of the late political icon Lamidi Adedibu, and the Iyaloja-General of Oyo State, Alhaja Saratu Aduke.

Despite the grief, a palpable sense of anticipation has swept across the city, particularly among families whose members are next in line for the throne. In line with the traditional succession structure of Ibadan, former Oyo State governor and Otun Olubadan, Chief Rasidi Adewolu Ladoja, is widely expected to become the next Olubadan.

Confirmation of his status as the Olubadan-designate came shortly after traditional trumpets were sounded at his Bodija residence—an age-old signal that signifies the emergence of a new king in Ibadanland.

Oba Olakulehin’s reign may have been short, but many residents say he made a lasting impact. As the city mourns the loss of one monarch, attention is already turning to the future, with hope that the next Olubadan will continue the legacy of peace, development, and cultural pride.
