The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on the national assembly to increase its 2025 budgetary allocation to N126 billion.

Chairman of INEC,  Mahmoud Yakubu made the appeal on Friday while defending the commission’s 2025 budget before the joint committee of the senate and house of representatives on INEC. Yakubu noted that the N40 billion proposed by the federal government for the electoral body was insufficient to fund its operations for the year.

“Our proposal for the 2025 budget requires over N126 billion,” Yakubu explained. “We have prepared a detailed, line-by-line breakdown of how this sum will be spent, and we seek the support of the national assembly to enable us to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities effectively.”

He emphasized that most of INEC’s activities for 2025 are constitutional obligations, necessitating adequate funding to ensure the commission’s preparedness and efficiency.

Yakubu’s appeal comes at a time when INEC is tasked with strengthening its operations, including voter registration, election monitoring, and leveraging technology for credible elections.
