As Nigeria prepares to mark Democracy Day on June 12, civil rights group Take It Back Movement  has formally notified the Lagos State Police Command of a planned peaceful protest.

The movement, through its Lagos Coordinator, Adekunle Taofeek, called on the police to provide protection for demonstrators during the nationwide exercise.

In an open letter addressed to the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Moshood Jimoh, TIB described the protest as a peaceful stand against the country’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship. “The people of Nigeria—young and old, working class and unemployed—will take to the streets in peaceful protest against the unbearable hardship strangling this nation,” the letter read.

The organisers emphasised that June 12 should not be treated as just a ceremonial date but a reminder of the people’s continuous fight for justice, freedom, and economic fairness. “We will continue to fight, peacefully but fearlessly, until this country works for all of us,” the letter added.
