The Lagos State House of Assembly has impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa over allegations of fraud and financial misconduct. His removal occurred during a plenary session on Monday, where lawmakers unanimously agreed on the decision.
Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda has been sworn in as the first female Speaker of the Assembly, while Mojeed Fatai was elected the new Deputy Speaker.
The Clerk of the House, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, was also suspended indefinitely. In addition, all principal positions and standing committees of the House were dissolved. A legislator stated that the impeachment was aimed at restoring the integrity of the House, asserting that members had “had enough” of Obasa’s leadership.
Obasa, who has served six terms representing Agege Constituency I under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has faced multiple accusations during his tenure. A prominent case involved allegations by the Lagos State Anti-Corruption Coalition that the Assembly spent N17 billion on constructing a gate and N200 million on a Thanksgiving event. Obasa dismissed these claims as “politically motivated,” saying they were baseless and intended to tarnish his reputation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The new Speaker, Mojisola Meranda, has vowed to unite the Assembly and lead efforts to rebuild its reputation. Lawmakers emphasized that the impeachment was a collective decision to safeguard the Assembly’s image and meet their obligations to Lagos State.
Obasa’s Chief Press Secretary, Eromosele Ebhomele, has yet to comment on the development, while further details regarding the specific allegations and investigations remain unclear.
