The Lagos State Government has announced it will begin full enforcement of a ban on single-use plastics (SUPs) starting July 1, 2025, in a decisive move to curb environmental pollution.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement on Monday via his official X account, noting that the decision follows 18 months of consultations with manufacturers, marketers, and other stakeholders.
“From July 1, 2025, @followlasg will commence full enforcement of the ban on Single Use Plastics (SUPs). We’ve been intentional and strategic with 18 months of dialogue, engagement and transition. Now, it’s time to act,” Wahab wrote.
He stated that the state government is committed to environmental responsibility and aligning with global best practices. “What is unacceptable elsewhere cannot become standard in Lagos. We must protect our future and do what is right for the greater good,” he added.
The ban, which follows the successful enforcement of a styrofoam ban earlier this year, reflects the government’s resolve to address the growing threat of plastic pollution and its impact on the environment and public health.
