Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has made it clear he is not jumping ship, despite mounting pressure and defections from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), declaring that his loyalty to the party remains firm.
Speaking in Ibadan on Wednesday at the inauguration of newly elected PDP South West zonal executive members, Makinde dismissed speculations about his political future, stating that he had no plans to follow defectors abandoning the party.
“People keep asking where the PDP is going, especially now that governors and other leaders are decamping. But I told them: we’re not leaving—at least not until hunger joins the APC,” Makinde said to applause from party faithful gathered at the Soji Adagunodo House along Old Ife Road.
The remark, laced with satire, appeared to be a jab at the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which has welcomed a wave of defections in recent months, including from within the PDP’s ranks.
Makinde’s message sought to reassure his base that the PDP in the South West remains intact and connected to grassroots concerns.
“The PDP is still with the people,” Makinde added. “We will stay where the people are, not where power is concentrated in the hands of a few who are disconnected from the everyday struggles of Nigerians.”
