McPherson University, one of Nigeria’s leading private tertiary institutions, has reiterated its commitment to raising a generation of scholars with both academic knowledge and entrepreneurial skills.

This vision was showcased at the third edition of the university’s annual inter-school essay and quiz competition, held at its campus in Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State.

The event brought together secondary school students from Oyo, Ogun, and Lagos states, who participated in a rigorous academic contest and were also exposed to innovative projects developed by McPherson University students.

Participants had the opportunity to witness firsthand a range of student-made products such as footwear, solar panels, batteries, clothing, wigs, and soaps—evidence of the institution’s strong emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship.

Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Igbasan, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olatunji Okesola, emphasized the importance of entrepreneurial education at all levels. He noted that the competition was designed not only to encourage academic excellence but also to instill a culture of creativity and self-reliance in young learners.

“This event is about more than just quizzes and essays. It’s about opening young minds to the possibilities that come with innovation and entrepreneurship,” Prof. Okesola said.

Stakeholders at the event, including Dr. Mike Oso, Chairman of the University’s Enrollment Committee and convener of the programme, and Dr. Ayodeji Adeshina, Principal Assistant Registrar, praised the initiative as a platform to nurture future leaders with relevant skills for a competitive world.

Some of the students expressed excitement about their participation, describing it as an enriching experience that went beyond academics.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of prizes and certificates to outstanding participants. Bamisile Ayomide from Champion International School, Abeokuta, emerged as the overall winner, while Somide Oluwadarasimi and Sanusi Tobiloba finished as first and second runners-up respectively.

The event ended on a celebratory note, with hopes that the competition will continue to grow and inspire more students in the years to come.
