As the world embraces rapid digital transformation, McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, is placing itself at the forefront of technological innovation in Nigeria’s education sector by encouraging students to apply their ICT skills within their immediate environment.
The university made this call during its annual Tech Expo held on campus, themed “Innovating the Digital Future: Emerging Trends in Computing and Technology.” The event, organised by the College of Computing, brought together leading tech minds, students, and academics from across the country to explore how digital innovation can be cultivated at the university level.
Delivering the keynote on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francis Igbasan, the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Olatunji Okesola, said the institution is deliberately investing in its tech-inclined students. He noted that McPherson is not only nurturing talent but also building an environment where students can deploy their skills to address internal challenges within the institution.
Also speaking, the acting Dean of the College of Computing, Dr. Emmanuel Ibam, stressed the readiness of the students to lead in the digital space. He charged them to apply their knowledge to practical problems and innovation projects on campus.
A highlight of the event was the address by Prof. Olumide Adewale, a tech expert from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), who stressed the importance of higher institutions driving Nigeria’s digital revolution. He called for the integration of real-life computing challenges into academic learning to better prepare students for the industry.
Students who attended described the expo as an eye-opener, citing the sessions as both inspiring and empowering.
The day concluded with a series of innovative tech presentations, the launch of new tech clubs, and a panel discussion on the future of computing in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
