Telecommunications giant MTN has confirmed it experienced a cybersecurity breach on Thursday, resulting in unauthorized access to personal information of customers in select markets.

In a statement issued following the incident, MTN said that its core network, billing systems, and financial infrastructure including its mobile money platform remained secure and fully functional.

The breach reportedly involved a third-party intrusion into specific segments of MTN’s systems, raising the specter of potential data exposure.

“At this stage, we do not have any information to suggest that customers’ accounts and wallets have been directly compromised,” the company noted.

Upon discovering the breach, MTN swiftly activated its cybersecurity protocols and alerted relevant South African authorities, including the Police Service and the Hawks. Regulatory bodies across affected countries have also been notified, and investigations are ongoing.
