Mudashiru Obasa has been reinstated as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following the sudden resignation of Mojisola Meranda. His return was confirmed during Monday’s plenary session.
Obasa’s reinstatement marks a dramatic turnaround after his impeachment in January, when over 90% of lawmakers voted to remove him over allegations of poor leadership, high-handedness, habitual lateness, abuse of office, and intimidation of colleagues.
At the time, Obasa rejected the impeachment, arguing that due process was not followed. He also denied allegations of financial misappropriation, calling them baseless and “impossible.”
Despite the controversy surrounding his removal, his return signals a shift in the Assembly’s power dynamics, with political observers keenly watching how he will navigate governance moving forward.
