The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has deployed response teams to 15 states identified as high-risk flood zones following recent devastating floods in Niger state.

Manzo Ezekiel, Head of NEMA’s Press Unit, revealed the development on Tuesday, stating that the deployment is part of intensified efforts to educate residents on flood preparedness and the urgent need to relocate from vulnerable areas. He blamed the Mokwa tragedy on residents living in gully-prone regions, despite prior flood warnings.

“The victims in Mokwa were caught unawares because many of them built their homes in gully areas highly susceptible to flooding,” Ezekiel said.

The affected states include Kogi, Imo, Enugu, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Zamfara, Katsina, and the *lFederal Capital Territory, among others. These regions, according to NEMA, are part of a growing list of locations likely to suffer severe flooding during Nigeria’s rainy season, which typically spans April to October.

Just last week, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) issued forecasts warning of heavy storms across Abuja and 14 other states, including flood-stricken Niger State.
