The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced that the country has officially met the deadline for expressing interest in hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Abuja nominated as the prospective host city.

Public Relations Officer of the NOC,Tony Nezianya revealed the development in a statement issued on Monday in Lagos, following the committee’s executive meeting held on April 3 in Abuja.

He confirmed that Nigeria submitted its expression of interest before the March 28 deadline set for the bid process.

However, Nezianya clarified that a formal bid will only proceed if the Federal Government endorses the project. “Nigeria can only commence a formal bid if the Federal Government gives a backing to the project,” he stated.

He added that hosting the 2030 Games would be a significant milestone for the nation, providing a platform to highlight Nigeria’s growth, enhance its international image, and energize its sports sector.

Recall that Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003, when the African Games—COJA 2003—took place in Abuja.
